Senate Democrat knocks TrumpRx: 'Glorified coupon book'

Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) blasted the direct-to-consumer (DTC) TrumpRx platform launched by the administration Thursday, denouncing it as a “glorified coupon book.”

The Trump administration launched its DTC discount drug portal TrumpRx.gov Thursday evening. The website allows patients who are not on government health plans to print or download coupons for a few dozen drugs and present them at a pharmacy.

The discounts ranged from 33 percent to 93 percent for drugs treating obesity, diabetes, asthma and infertility. Administration officials said Thursday that more drugs would be added.

Wyden, however, was unimpressed by what TrumpRx ultimately ended up being.

“Every American familiar with the Trump record knows that all roads in TrumpRx will lead to Trump’s pocket,” Wyden said in a statement Friday.

“TrumpRx is nothing more than a glorified coupon book, and it will advance the Republican agenda to undermine affordable health care for American families,” he added. “Americans don’t want to jump through yet another health care hoop on Trump’s self-serving website. Patients deserve to leave the doctor’s office, go to the pharmacy, and pay a low price for their medicine–no coupon needed.”

In a statement earlier this week, Wyden and several other Senate Democrats hit at President Trump for what they argued was his failure to lower drug prices.

“Our doors are wide open to anybody who wants to take the bold next step forward on lowering drug costs for Americans,” the Oregon senator said. “Let’s supercharge Medicare negotiations, leave middlemen nowhere to hide their shameless profiteering, and end the Trump and RFK Jr. [Robert F. Kennedy Jr.] chaos while restoring the prestige of the research and science community.”
